about Poker - Types of Popular Poker Games
Texas Hold'em
Each deal has rounds. First each player is dealt two
cards face down (called the pocket cards). On the next round three
community cards (the flop), that all players can see and use, are
placed to the table. On each of the following rounds a new
community card is added to the table, one is called the turn (4th
face up card) and the last the river (5th face up card). Each player
can use his/her pocket cards together with the community cards to
form the best possible poker hand from the ranks above.
Five Card Draw
Each player is dealt five cards face down. The player
has one chance to throw away any cards, in return for new cards.
Five Card Stud
Each player is dealt only one card face down and one
card face up. Players then place their bets. The dealer then gives
each remaining player three more cards face up. The players then
choose whether to bet or fold.
Seven Card Stud
This game is the best game for beginners to learn
the art of poker. Each player is dealt two cards face down and one
card face up. The player with the low card opens the betting. Each
player in turn either calls, raises, or folds.
Omaha
Omaha is played in the same way as Texas Holdem except that:
- each player is dealt four cards face down at the start of
the hand, and
- to make a winning hand a player must use exactly two
cards from his hand and three cards from the table.
- Omaha may be played using Pot Limit or Limit betting styles.
Omaha Hi Lo
Omaha Hi Lo is played in the same way as Omaha except that the
pot is split between the winning high hand and the winning low hand,
if there is one. The low hand must be 8 or lower to qualify.
This means that the flop, turn and river (the five cards dealt face
up) must have 3 cards 8 or lower for any player to qualify for a
low hand. Note that pairs do not qualify so if you have 2
aces in your hand only one can be used toward a lo win.
Players may use any two cards from their hand to make a high hand
and any two cards to make a low hand.
